Coffee-For-Breakfast

Coffee is usually consumed in the morning. It is the usual wake-up call for most people. Caffeine, which is a natural stimulant that gives us an energetic start, is found in coffee. Coffee for breakfast works well with any morning meal to boost the energy for a long day.

Nowadays, as recent research regarding the health benefits of moderate consumption of coffee is suggesting, that it lowers the risk of prostate cancer in men, lower depression in women and protection from Type 2 Diabetes, it is not being taken for breakfast only anymore.

Some creative cooks now include it on their concoctions, which stir the brain and reduce the stress of the one taking it.

Excerpts from an article written by Judy Royal in Star News Online site, regarding coffee being added as an ingredient to various mouthwatering food and drink concoctions. It is being used as ingredients in candles and aromatherapy sessions.

Coffee for breakfast, I don`t think so

Coffee isn’t just for breakfast anymore, and it’s far from a standalone beverage these days. Creative cooks are finding that a well-placed java jolt can add zing to their culinary concoctions. Studies suggest that just smelling coffee can stir the brain and reduce stress.

A jolt of Joe

Introduced in 2005, Van Gogh Espresso Vodka incorporates the flavor of Colombian coffee beans with a hint of cocoa and citrus. It’s handcrafted in small batches through a double infusion method. He uses only natural ingredients to ensure it tastes and smells like hot, fresh espresso. Order it online from www.crownwineandspirits.com for $25.99 or look for it in the liquor store.

Two great tastes in one

When you’re looking to warm up, forget about choosing between hot chocolate and coffee. You can have them both in one cup at Surf House, which has locations in Carolina Beach and Racine Commons. Made with 12 ounces of coffee, bars of French Valrhona dark chocolate, cream, sweetener and two bruleed marshmallows. The $3.50 Java is one of nine hot chocolate varieties the shop offers during winter months (and 50 cents cheaper than all the others).

Coffee and cake together

Chef Chris Lubben, a former owner of Chris’ Cosmic Kitchen, uses coffee and coffee grounds to make one flavor of his famous cheesecake. He sells through weekly orders to cosmiccheesecake@gmail.com and delivers to pick up spots in Brunswick and New Hanover counties. The 12-slice coffee creation has a crust of whole Oreo cookies and weighs 5 pounds, all for $28. Order by Tuesday and eat it on Thursday. Even those who don’t love coffee, including kids, are known to enjoy the sweet, rich flavor.

Sweet-smelling burnt coffee

Burn a 100 percent soy coffee candle from Candles Etc., 25 Market St., and people might swear something’s brewing. Owner Michael Lambrix said it’s one of the shop’s bestsellers, and he attributes the robust and natural fragrance to natural and essential oils as well as a hint of chocolate. The coffee candle is one of 43 Old Wilmington Candle Company scents made on site. Prices range from $7.95 for a 4-ounce travel tin to $24.95 for a 21-ounce jar that burns for 11 hours. Buy three or more candles and get 10 percent off.

Energy boost

Lift yourself with some freshly brewed aromatherapy. Coffee bean essential oil, with notes of chocolate and bitter spice, is meant to energize the body and mind, improve respiration and soothe aching muscles. It may also be used as an appetite stimulant, mood enhancer, antioxidant, anti-depressant and room deodorizer as well as a way to combat nausea and heal insect stings. Order it online from www.living.com

Its benefits are being acknowledged, thus making it available not only in breakfast but throughout the whole day.

Choose The Best Coffee Grinder

How to choose the best coffee grinder

You probably know there are many types of coffee grinders available on the market today, so it will be confusing for you to choose the coffee grinder that suits your demand.

If you are looking for a best coffee grinder but don’t know where to start, then congratulations because here We will show you How to choose the best coffee grinder on the market.

What is the best coffee grinder

Burr-grinders-vs-blade-grinders

First of all, we should know about what makes the best burr coffee grinder? The answer is depending on the type of coffee you want to grind. If you wish to make espresso coffee or drip coffee or want a versatile coffee grinder, we will show you the most popular coffee grinders on the market today.

Burr grinder

Burr grinder will crush coffee beans instead of cutting them, it has better consistency on better control. However, the downside is the price. It usually costs more than other types of grinders, and it uses more electric power if you choose an electric burr grinder.

Blade grinder

This is an extremely popular grinder on the market for those who just want to grind coffee most simply. It will cut its coffee beans into small pieces with its crushed tongue. This type of coffee grinder is relatively cheap that anyone can buy it. Still, the only downside is that your coffee will not have a regular size after grinding.

What type of burr would you choose? Flat or Conical

If you have decided to buy a burr grinder, then read below because we will show you the types of burr grinders available.

Flat Burr Grinder

This type of grinder will use centrifugal force to push the coffee beans towards the teeth of the flat burr. You can adjust the coffee grinder’s rotating configuration by moving the plates closer together to make the coffee beans smooth.

Or move them farther apart if you want your coffee beans not too smooth. It is generally cheaper than the conical burr grinder. Still, you will need to replace the new coffee grinder after grinding 250 to 600 kg of coffee.

Conical Burr Grinder

If you want a more professional coffee grinder, you can choose the best conical burr grinder because they are more durable than other types. And you can rotate from 750 to 1000 kg of coffee before removing them from your kitchen.

What material should you choose for your burr grinder? Steel or Ceramic

Steel

Coffee grinders made of steel heat up faster and also cool down more quickly. So coffee shop owners tend to choose this type of coffee grinder.

Ceramic

Meanwhile, ceramic coffee grinders tend to have a longer life span, and they are more expensive than steel coffee grinders. Ceramic coffee grinders conduct heatless, so it will take longer for them to heat up and cool down.

Although they have a longer life span, an accident will cause it to break, so if you want to choose this type of coffee grinder, you should be concerned about its storage.

Size of burr grinder

The size of a coffee grinder is usually based on your intended use and the size of your kitchen. If you have a small kitchen space, it would be great if you choose a compact coffee grinder.

If you want to own a professional coffee grinder, we think the size won’t be a problem. After all, best-rated coffee grinders do not take up too much of your space, and you can completely arrange the area to put it in the most appropriate position.

Consistency

Consistency is one of the most important things you should consider when deciding to buy a coffee grinder. It will affect the taste and aroma of the coffee after grinding.

To have a stunning cup of coffee, the first, the quality of the beans, plays an important role, in addition to what makes the flavor of coffee is smoothness and stability after grinding. If you want coffee to have good fineness, a burr coffee grinder will be the right tool.

Price

It can be said that the price of a good coffee grinder is always in customers’ top attention. We have to say that a good coffee grinder will not be cheap, coffee mills costing between $ 100 and $ 500 are considered to be relatively good coffee grinders.

You can also find coffee grinders for less than $ 100. Still, considering the durability and taste of the coffee you will drink, we think you should buy one of the top-rated coffee grinders to have a better experience.

What’s more, higher-priced coffee grinders are usually made from better durable materials, and you can also use it longer. This will save you money because you won’t have to buy a new coffee grinder many times in the future.

Capacity

Each coffee grinder has a certain capacity, so if your family drinks coffee in small quantities, we don’t think you will need to buy a high-capacity coffee grinder. And in contrast, those who are operating coffee shops should choose a coffee grinder with large capacity because it can grind many coffee beans at the same time.

Speed

You probably won’t care about the grinding speed of a good coffee grinder because obviously, a coffee grinder will have lots of different grinding settings. If your coffee grinder has a high false rate, it will generate a lot of heat, which will affect the taste and aroma of the coffee. So we recommend you buy a coffee grinder with moderate and low grinding speed.

Coffee Beans—The Starting Point of the Delicious Coffee

Some people can’t start their day without having at least a cup of delicious coffee. This tasty and aromatic drink may even be described as their fuel for them to get their energy to do the things they need to do.

But as some of us are highly dependent to this beverage, do we really know where our beloved gourmet coffee is coming from? Would it be a surprise if I would tell you that this morning-starter drink that we are talking about came from the fruit of a plant? Well, I know most of you already know that. And it is also common knowledge to most of you that these beans greatly contribute to the final taste of the coffee. So whether you like your coffee normal, decaf, or espresso you would find that each and every type of coffee would much rely on the quality of the coffee beans to be used. So let us learn more about these coffee beans…

The Coffee Plant

Coffee-Plant

In order for us to know more on coffee beans, we should review where the coffee beans are coming from–the coffee tree. The coffee tree is commonly at the length of 5-10 meters in height. As the tree gains maturity, it starts to branch out less and less while on the other hand it produces more leaves and bears more fruit. It characteristically starts to give off fruit three to five years after being planted and will continue to bear fruits until ten to twenty more years, depending on the type of coffee plant and to what kind of area it was planted.

These coffee plants are planted in rows that are quite a few feet away from each other. At some instances, farmers choose to plant them around other fruit trees and sometimes even on the sides of hills. The reason for this is because the coffee plant needs particular circumstances in order to fully flourish.

Coffee plants require warm climate in order to grow perfectly and it is not ideal for them to grow on a climate that is too hot. They also need at least 70 inches of rainfall in a year. Coffee plants require lots of rain in the beginning of the season as the fruits are just starting to develop. But as time goes by, the plants need less water at the time the fruits start to ripen. Harvesting period may range from three weeks up to three months after the fruits become ripe. In some locations, harvesting may extend up to the whole year round.

Now we are enlightened as to where the coffee beans come from but how can we really know which beans are perfect to give us the satisfaction that we search for in an aromatic cup of coffee that we consume every morning?

Coffee Beans 101: How Can We Choose the Best Coffee Beans?

Arabica-and-robusta-coffee-beans-side-by-side

It is common knowledge that plants live healthier when they reside on rich soil. Knowing this, how can we assure that the coffee beans that we buy are of the best quality? Which countries produce the best kinds of coffee beans?

Some people buy raw green coffee beans just to do the roasting themselves. Well, roasting coffee at home seems a really romantic idea. In fact, a lot of Arab countries’ traditions in the past involved roasting of coffee in an open flame. The said act usually marked the start of their coffee ceremonies.

On the western part of the globe, American households still exercise the habit of roasting coffee inside the house. Some people even choose to grind coffee beans with their own coffee grinders to assure that their coffee is nothing but fresh. Other people blend coffee beans too, this means that they mix and match the different kinds of beans in order to suit the flavors that they seek. Doing this makes the coffee much more “personal” and unique that will surely cater to the individual taste of the coffee enthusiast. Some of you may try doing these aforementioned procedures and find out what they can do to help you produce your own gourmet blend. But roasting and blending coffee at home is not enough to ensure the vastness of the coffee’s taste and quality; it all starts with choosing the right coffee beans.

When choosing, it is recommended that you look at the grade of the green coffee beans. It is imperative that you choose high grade beans that will suit your need for a good cup of coffee. Some top suggestions from great reviews would be the Colombian Supremo, Brazilian Santos, Kenya AA, and the Guatemalan Antigua coffee seeds. These beans are grown in highly favorable atmosphere or environment that are well-matched to the cultivation of coffee plants. This just proves that these beans are of the best quality to be roasted for your own individual taste!

But as looking out for the coffee beans’ grade is very significant, it is also important to make sure the freshness of the coffee beans. There are cases where the beans are stocked for a very long time in warehouses that they become less and less appropriate for roasting and consumption. A suggested action in order to guarantee that the coffee beans are fresh is to buy directly from the coffee beans manufacturers. Doing this will assure you that the beans you buy have not undergone months of waiting on the shelves. But if it is inevitable that you buy from a wholesaler, be skeptical of the bean shop and check the quality of the beans immediately after you purchased them. See if the beans are of the same texture and at roughly the same size. Also, check if there are beans with white edges or other kinds of discolorations. With this, you will be able to make sure that you have fresh coffee beans that are perfectly suited for roasting.

Just follow these tips and you will surely be able to enjoy the best aromatic and gourmet coffee that you roasted yourself at the comforts of your home from these tiny yet efficient coffee beans!

Coffee and Health

“Thank God for Coffee!”

Well, this phrase might be what goes through the minds of those people that choose to induce coffee in their daily routine. And let me tell you that “those people” that I’m talking about shouldn’t be taken lightly as there are A LOT of people who can’t go by a day without having a tasty and aromatic cup of coffee.

It has been researched that more than 50% of Americans (those over 18 years of age) drink coffee in a day. This is constituted by roughly a number of 150 MILLION Americans that drink their dose of coffee daily. So, if you can’t start your day without sipping your own choice of tasty coffee, fear not, because I’m telling you that YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

So why do people (including you and me) love coffee? Besides the taste that it ecstatically contains, what other reasons should we know to be more thankful for the existence of our beloved coffee? The following are the most popular notions that connect coffee and health!

Coffee and its High Antioxidant Amount

Coffee and its High Antioxidant Amount

Even though fruits and vegetables are the richest sources of antioxidants, coffee was still (though not surprisingly) hailed as the primary source of antioxidants for people residing in America. Coffee has been researched as the number one and primary source of antioxidants in the American diet.

So what are antioxidants? Antioxidants are nutrients that are acquired in different kinds of food that lessen the oxidative damage that our body takes in. There are cases that when our body’s cells make use of oxygen, there will be by-products (free radicals) that are produced that May and can cause harm to the other cells in our body. This is where coffee and its high antioxidant count will enter. Antioxidants take the role as hunters of these free radicals to lessen and avoid the occurrence of cell damage. They also repair the damage that has already been done by the free radicals. Thus, contributing to the welfare of the body.

This means that drinking coffee regularly will heighten your defense against damage in your body, making it one of the things that connect coffee and health. Antioxidants help in strengthening your immune system that will eventually lead to fewer health problems. Some sicknesses that can be prevented by antioxidants are heart disease, macular degeneration, diabetes, and even cancer.

There is no significant difference between the antioxidants found in caffeinated and decaf coffee. It was researched that both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffees contain similar amounts of antioxidants. Which means that you could still enjoy the benefits of antioxidants whether or not you choose to drink your coffee caffeinated or decaf.

Coffee Reduces Diabetes Risk

There have also been talks that coffee may reduce the occurrence of type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is caused if the cells that are located in the liver, fat, and muscles do not use insulin properly. In the long process, the pancreas will eventually fail to produce enough insulin count that shall suffice the body’s needs. Because of this, glucose found in the blood will increase neglecting the fact that the cells are starved of energy. High blood glucose causes damage in the different nerves and blood vessels in the body. It may lead to complications such as stroke, nerve problems, gum infections, heart and kidney disease, and even amputation.

According to a study done in 2004, people who drink six or more cups of coffee in a day have less risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The study detailed that the effects differ between genders. Men who consume that number of coffee cups in a day will have a 50% less risk of type 2 diabetes than a person who does not drink coffee at all. On the other side of the coin, women who drink the same amount of coffee daily will have 30% less risk of the said type of diabetes.

A more recent study done by the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) discovered a molecular mechanism that may be possibly behind the coffee’s positive effect on the deterrence of type 2 diabetes. There is the protein in our body named sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), which is responsible for the biological activity of the sex hormones, testosterone and estrogen found in the body that play a role in the occurrence of type 2 diabetes. Coffee consumption, they revealed, increases plasma levels of SHBG.

A higher level of SHBG means lower risks of having any diabetes. As coffee generates higher SHBG levels, then it will help in preventing the sickness. Though this is not true for decaffeinated coffee, the research said, because drinking decaf does not affect in any way the levels of SHBG in the body.

Caffeine in Coffee

Coffee molecules

Coffee is known for the caffeine found in it. So what can this substance do to our body to help us in our everyday routines? Coffee consumption gives us caffeine that is useful when we are sleepy but needed to be awake to focus on something. As a central nervous system stimulant, caffeine helps in perking you up whenever you sense drowsiness. Caffeine provides mental alertness to give you a boost to your work. This is useful when you need to work on or finish something and cannot indulge in sleep. Caffeine will assist you to be alert once more to work efficiently and successfully beat the deadlines!

Coffee and Heart Disease

Coffee-and-Heart-Disease

Some say that coffee drinkers have lower chances of heart disease occurrence. A study showed that having three to six cups of coffee in a day may give you a 36 percent lower chance of having heart disease compared to just having one cup of coffee a day. This is good news, though moderate coffee drinking does not have a significant effect in lowering stroke, the research implied.

Coffee and Health together is still the best

Though it has been said that drinking coffee may help in different health aspects, it is still best advised that you drink coffee in moderation. This is because the practice may contribute positively in some ways, but it may also be harmful in other parts. So the paramount thing to do in this case is to be safe and drink coffee moderately and just enjoy the benefits that go along by doing so as coffee and health are best enjoyed together!
